Course info
This 30 hour taught module introduces basic counselling skills that can be used in the workplace as an adjunct to other professional skills, or as a foundation module for continuing study of counselling. Students will acquire an understanding of the therapeutic environment and through this process they will also begin to develop an awareness of themselves. The syllabus covers: understanding the difference between counselling skills and counselling; identifying listening skills; understanding feelings and non-verbal communication; empathy; role-play practice; identifying ways of asking questions; paraphrasing and summarising; understanding issues in working with diversity; study skills training; self and peer assessment. You may attend this course, learn the skills and take them away with you, without having to complete any written assessments, or you be assessed and gain 20 Credits at Level 1. If you wish to apply for the Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling you will need to complete and pass the three assignments for this module. You will then be invited to make a formal application for the Certificate and attend interview.

Assessment method
For those participants who want to gain university credits for the module, there are three assignments that involve observation of communication, a short essay, personal reflection on the impact of the course and the demonstration of basic counselling skills. Students successfully completing the assessment requirements will be awarded 20 Higher Education Credits at Level 1. At the end of this course students will be able to: demonstrate their ability to use basic counselling skills in a relationship with a role-play client; demonstrate an awareness of factors that influence an appropriate counselling environment; demonstrate some awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in communication skills; demonstrate an ability to communicate their learning in a written format.

Entry Requirements
This module is open to anyone who has an interest in developing counselling skills. No prior experience is necessary. In order to complete the assignments they will need a good standard of written and spoken English. They will need to be motivated and committed to participated in group discussion and exercises that will involve some disclosure of personal issues. Participants will need to be ready and able to give and take feedback from other members of the group on their skills and personal development.
